Hello everybody!!

This Elena from JaƩn. I attended APC convention in representation of GRETA (Andalusian English Teachers Association) and I've got to congratulate you because both talks and organization were perfect. The asscoaition did a great job choosing the venue, timetable and speakers. Congratualtions again and hope to meet you in September in Granada for GRETA Annual Convention (gretaassociation.org).

Hi!
I attended the convention and I'm eager to get all the handouts that the speakers said would be available in the APAC's wedsite. When do you think this will be possible?

Hi there! As always, I enjoyed myself at the convention this year.

I've just finished putting together some questionnaire results from 4 conference sessions I gave in Barcelona in Feb/March, three of which were at APAC. I noticed a strange thing in the results. While the feedback was very positive, and while most of the people who completed forms agreed that the talks matched their abstract and thus attendees expectations, most people indicated that there was a considerable quantity of material that they wouldn't be able to use in their own classes.

Does this mean that we sometimes choose to go to sessions that are a bit different to what we normally do, or does it mean that in general, attendees have a low expectation of how relevant sessions will be to them? Is this discrepancy innevitable at ELT conferences or conferences of any kind?

One idea I came up with was that if conference attendees were able to e-mail presenters in the week before the event with any questions they had about the talk's content, wouldn't this save participants that awful moment when they realise that the talk they have just settled down to see really has very little to do with their work?

What are people's thoughts about this?

Chris

The idea of contacting speakers personally to inquire about their proposed talks might enable attendees to choose suitable sessions more easily. However, having e-mail addresses made public may not appeal to every speaker. Maybe we could use this blog or the APAC social network to allow both parties to communicate before the Convention without invading privacy. Writing talk summaries which are more specific could also be helpful.
